The Antzuola sanitation collector was built 45 years ago, but the connection to the central Deba collector in Bergara was pending. Consequently, all domestic and industrial wastewater was discharged into the river near the Arizti farmhouse, next to the Matz Erreka stream. The request for this connection has been "historic," and finally, the third and last phase of the project has been completed.
The delay was largely due to the fact that the section from the Galartza neighborhood bridge to the industrial area of Urteaga street in Bergara had to be carried out concurrently with the greenway works. The project began planning in 2010 but has undergone several revisions until 2024, when the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, the Ura Agency, and Gipuzkoako Urak signed a collaboration agreement.
The works have cost over 2.7 million euros and were executed by the companies Jaizubia Obrak and Moyua Eraikuntzak within an eight-month period. Now, the greenway is almost entirely complete, and pedestrian and cyclist traffic has begun, being well-received by users.
However, one final phase remains: the section passing in front of the old Arregi Carpentry on Urteaga street. The Bergara City Council has already completed the section from the Ibargarai street bus stop to the end of the houses on Urteaga street. In this fifth and final phase, one lane of the current road will become a greenway, and a traffic light will regulate single-lane vehicle circulation in both directions.
The budget allocation for these works is included in this year's budget, and the City Council will apply for a subsidy. The project will be presented to the territorial committee in the coming days, and once approved, all details will be announced. The Mayor of Antzuola has also positively evaluated the project, as it strengthens the relationship between the two towns.
