The mountain club Artarrai M.T. from Ermua, in collaboration with the associations Montes Solidarios and Ezina Eginez Ekina, has organized an inclusive ascent of Mount Urko in memory of Javier Alberdi. This initiative, which utilized four Joëlette chairs, once again demonstrated that the mountain is accessible to everyone, combining solidarity and passion.
In remembrance of the experienced mountaineer Javier Alberdi Altuna (1969-2019), the III Memorial filled the day with solidarity activities. From 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, numerous people ascended Mount Urko non-stop, raising funds for the fight against cancer. For each completed ascent, a sum of money was donated, contributing to the event's significant success.
At 10:00 AM, the start had a special meaning, as volunteers from the associations Montes Solidarios, Ezina Ekinez Egina, and Zure Irrifarra, Nire Indarra assisted individuals with reduced mobility in reaching the summit. Mount Urko (795m), located in the Debabarrena region, features a demanding climb, especially in the initial kilometers, and is a pilgrimage site for mountain enthusiasts.
The event began at Cardenal Orbe square. Although the usual route is via Atarrai, this time the first part of the ascent was made by road. While the surface was more comfortable, the inclines proved challenging for the volunteers. At the summit, an emotional tribute to Javi was held next to the tree planted in his memory.
The route alternates between narrow forest paths and open terrain, offering spectacular views of the Urkiola massif. The final kilometer, particularly steep, required maximum effort to reach the summit, from where magnificent views of Ermua and Eibar can be admired. The descent also demanded concentration, especially when controlling the chairs, and the warm welcome in Ermua moved the participants.
In total, 735 ascents were completed, with some participants undertaking up to nine climbs. The event highlighted the importance of solidarity and remembrance. The organizers confirmed their return next year, also recalling the upcoming Hirutxikiak Trail race on September 19th.
