The canteen building and its adjacent facilities, including toilets, showers, and changing rooms, which stood for over four decades at Saturraran beach in Mutriku, have been demolished. The Coastal Service, responsible for managing the public maritime-terrestrial domain, carried out the demolition. The area previously occupied by the canteen has now been covered with sand, restoring the beach to its original size.
The canteen was originally constructed in the late 1970s. It had remained closed for the past two summers due to detected deficiencies in its sewage system. Consequently, Costas did not grant permission for its opening during the 2024 summer season.
This summer, the Mutriku City Council will introduce a new solution, replacing the food trucks with a mobile canteen. This new facility will not be located on the beach itself but in the parking area to preserve the sandy expanse. Construction is also underway in the same parking zone for an underground tank to collect wastewater from the canteen and toilets.
