A new fixed speed camera has been installed on the Maltzaga viaduct in Eibar, at the connection point between the AP-1 and AP-8 motorways. This device is set to be activated in the coming days and will remain operational for the duration of the ongoing construction work on the viaduct. According to sources from the Department of Road Infrastructures, the speed limit will be 60 km/h, and it is expected to become active "soon".
“"Its objective is to guarantee the safety of the workers."
This type of radar is not new to the region. Regular drivers on the A-15 have been accustomed to construction zone radars for several years, particularly in the by-passes installed during the renovation of the motorway tunnels between Andoain and Irurtzun, where they are used to limit speed on narrower road sections. In this instance, the radar has been placed at the exit of the tunnel in the Donostia direction, where the road design reduces traffic from two lanes to one.
Construction on the Maltzaga viaduct began several months ago, and the introduction of this radar aims to maintain coexistence between traffic and workers, as a key premise of the project has been to avoid interrupting circulation. The project has a budget of 6.7 million euros and an execution period of 25 months, meaning the radar will be positioned at the entrance to the Maltzaga viaduct for nearly two years. The 150-meter infrastructure, classified as extradosed for combining beams and support cables, is undergoing the replacement of external prestressing cables, improvement of structural durability, and the installation of a monitoring system to oversee the viaduct.
This new radar, once authorized, will join the existing list of 36 fixed speed cameras on roads managed by the Traffic Department of the Security Department. This registry does not include devices installed by local councils. The highest concentration of surveillance is found along the N-I and AP-8 axis. Specifically, on the former, radars are distributed from the border with Araba in Etzegarate and Idiazabal, passing through critical points in Tolosa and Alegia, up to Andoain. It is in this municipality where surveillance is most intense, notably the Bazkardo radar set at 80 km/h.
