This year's event will be a significant appointment for those interested in learning about local history. The Esparbela association, with the support of the City Council, has organized four lectures, all starting at 7:00 PM with free admission.
Members of Esparbela have explained that the cycle is organized this year as a "monographic theme," and the lectures will focus on "shipbuilding in Gipuzkoa, and particularly in Mutriku, from the 16th century onwards." Additionally, "alongside the historical aspect, the ethnographic side will also be highlighted" in some sessions.
The events will kick off next Tuesday with a talk titled 'Patches of Mutriku's History' at Zabiele. Three members of Esparbela will participate: Arantza Ugarte will discuss the last shipyard in the town, Leonardo Belaustegui will cover the rise and subsequent crisis in shipbuilding, and Iosu Larrañaga will present the tools used for fishing in the area.
The second lecture is scheduled for May 21st, under the title 'Mutriku's role in Basque forestry and shipbuilding,' and will be delivered by Xabier Alberdi, director of the Maritime Museum of Bilbao.
The program will continue on the 26th with a lecture by Juan Antonio Apraiz, a Bermeo-based expert in shipbuilding, titled 'Coastal vessels and the last constructions by our carpenters.'
Finally, Lourdes Odriozola will give a talk on May 28th, 'Shipbuilding in Mutriku (16th - 18th centuries). From local reality to the context of Gipuzkoa.'
