Over the past two decades, the roads traversing Debabarrena, such as the AP-8 and N-634, have witnessed violent road incidents that have claimed the lives of young residents and students.
In 1991, four Ertzaintza officers died in Eibar when their car fell from the Azitain viaduct after skidding on an oil patch on the road. The officers were on their way to Errenteria police station before providing security services at the Foral Palace in Donostia.
The night of Thursday, April 8, 2010, became one of the darkest dates in the collective memory of Eibar and Elgoibar. A Volkswagen Golf carrying four young people from Eibar veered into the oncoming lane on the N-634, between Elgoibar and Maltzaga, in a head-on collision with a van. The impact was devastating, trapping the four young occupants, and also injuring the couple in the van and their two-year-old daughter.
Nearly five years later, on January 23, 2015, tragedy struck the area's youth again in an accident on the Eibar bypass (N-634). A Seat Ibiza carrying three university students heading to the Metalworking Tool Institute (IMH) in Elgoibar lost control in the Itzio tunnel, entered the opposite lane, and collided head-on with a truck. Two passengers died at the scene, and the driver was critically injured.
These incidents have reignited political and community debate regarding the danger of the Eibar bypass, leaving a profound mark on the region.
