The Itziar District Council has condemned the acts of vandalism and destruction that have been occurring in recent months in Itziar, and has announced that, in addition to warning residents, it has had to implement several measures.
The Action Group of the Itziar District Council has recalled that "at the beginning of the year, the streetlights on the Kaponsantu road were found broken. A few weeks later, we found the new public restrooms in the town square smashed and the surrounding walls defaced with insulting graffiti."
During the same period, the shed at the school garden suffered damage; and after the Erromeria Day festival, numerous streetlights were once again attacked in the urban center of Itziar. As if that were not enough, "recently, they entered the youth center located in the Burugorri building, disfigured a locker with graffiti, and stole the music equipment."
In the opinion of the District Council, these recurring incidents are not isolated cases: "These destructions and acts of vandalism against public heritage are unacceptable," explained the institution aiming to highlight these behaviors.
Consequently, in addition to condemning the events and warning residents, the District Council has announced that it has found itself "compelled" to take several measures.
"Having reached this point," the Itziar District Council has filed an official complaint with the local police, which has been forwarded to the Ertzaintza (Basque Police). The complaint "could lead to an investigation to identify the perpetrators"; and if it bears fruit, "the damages caused would be recovered, as far as possible."
Likewise, services that have so far been available through public trust will be restricted. Thus, "access to the Burugorri building will be limited, with copies of the new key being distributed to known individuals"; and the public restrooms in the town square, on the other hand, will be closed "while the situation is clarified."
Should similar incidents increase, "the implementation of surveillance measures" will be considered. In fact, the Itziar District Council is a small institution with limited financial capacity: "Damage like this directly impacts the maintenance of common heritage. The repair of the damages will cost around 10,000 euros, taken from the town's budget."
According to the representatives of Itziar's residents, "it is particularly concerning the degradation these behaviors bring to the model of coexistence and community building that we wish to protect in Itziar. Underestimating this as mere mischief could lead to the normalization of such acts, and then we would be facing an educational problem."
Finally, the Itziar District Council makes "a call for all citizens to act with responsibility and civility to address these regrettable trends."
