This initiative, now in its fourth edition after positive reception in previous years, will take place on Wednesday, May 13, between 11:00 and 13:00, in the stands area of Unzaga square. The activity seeks to promote ornamental recycling and reinforce the idea that plants that have completed their cycle in public spaces can continue to be used in balconies, terraces, and private homes. The distribution will be free and will continue until supplies run out.
Eibar's gardens are currently being prepared for the change of season and the renewal of winter urban flora. In this process, the City Council has chosen to recover plants that are still in good condition, preventing their automatic disposal and facilitating their replanting by citizens.
The specimens to be distributed come from various landscaped areas of the city and have been part of the urban ornamentation in recent months. Selected species include dianthus, violas, pansies, daisies, poppies, snapdragons, aquilegias, and forget-me-nots. These flowers, despite having completed their decorative function in municipal flowerbeds, retain suitable conditions to continue growing in other environments.
“"What was once considered waste is now understood as a citizen resource."
A municipal Environment official highlighted that this initiative, launched in 2023, has transformed the way part of the urban landscape is managed. Furthermore, they noted that the distribution responds to a direct demand from Eibar residents, and the municipal objective is to commit to the circular economy, even in ornamentation, by giving a second chance to flowers that still have life ahead.
The measure is part of an action plan that links the management of green spaces with sustainability criteria and resource utilization. In addition to reducing plant waste, the distribution familiarizes citizens with the work involved in maintaining gardens and flowerbeds, and promotes a more direct relationship with plant care in the domestic sphere. Citizen participation has been key to consolidating this event in recent years.
