The Eibar Local Police seized five electric scooters this weekend for riding on sidewalks and pedestrian areas, violating municipal regulations. In all five cases, officers confiscated the vehicles and issued fines.
The increasing use of these vehicles presents new challenges for ensuring safe circulation and adequate coexistence between pedestrians and scooter users. Eibar's Mayor, Jon Iraola, highlighted the work of the Local Police and the City Council's commitment to responding to citizen demands and ensuring public spaces are safe for everyone.
“
"The use of electric scooters has grown a lot, and we have the challenge of ensuring the regulations are respected. We are receiving numerous complaints from citizens on this matter and are working to address them. We want sidewalks and pedestrian areas to be safe spaces for everyone."
The mayor emphasized the importance of a visible Local Police presence on the streets. Meanwhile, Alberto de la Hoz, Councilor for Traffic and Mobility, stated that these devices create obvious risks when ridden on sidewalks, pedestrian areas, and parks, which is strictly prohibited. The department is revising the Traffic Ordinance to update it for current times and new mobility types, reminding that helmet use is mandatory from this month, and insurance will soon be required as well.

"These devices create obvious risk situations when they circulate on sidewalks, pedestrian areas, and parks, which is also strictly prohibited. From the department, we are working on a general revision of the Eibar Traffic Ordinance, to update it to current times and these new types of mobility. Starting this month, for example, helmet use is mandatory on electric scooters, and soon, having insurance will also be mandatory. I want to make it clear that we will be very rigorous in ensuring safe coexistence of these devices in urban spaces, between pedestrians and scooter users. Streets must be spaces for coexistence with clear rules and obligations. I want to remind you that we will soon formalize the increase in fines for sanctioning proceedings, so I hope this will also serve as an incentive for prudent use of electric scooters."
The City Council will continue working to promote responsible electric scooter use, reinforce compliance with regulations, and respond to citizen concerns, aiming to balance new mobility forms with pedestrians' right to safe passage.
