The Eibar City Council, through its Environment Department, is once again joining the European Mobility Week (SEM) with several activities scheduled between September 19 and 22. This campaign aims to raise awareness among Eibar residents about the public health and environmental benefits of using more sustainable modes of transport, particularly public transport, cycling, and walking.
The theme chosen by the European Commission for this year's campaign is “Mobility for all”. This theme emphasizes the importance of ensuring that all citizens have access to sustainable transport, regardless of their income, location, gender, or abilities. Children, youth, adults, and seniors face mobility challenges and obstacles related to their needs and capabilities.
The City Council is committed to this initiative once again, aiming to mobilize and encourage reflection among Eibar residents to promote sustainable mobility and create a healthier Eibar. To achieve this, various activities have been organized for September 19 and 22.
On September 19, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, the traditional second-hand market for bicycles and other sustainable mobility items will take place in Plaza Untzaga. This market, initiated in 2018, has seen significant participation annually, with over a hundred bicycles and related items deposited and around 50% sold. The organization is supported by a grant from the Sustainability Department of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council.
To participate in the market, pre-registration is required via www.merkabi.eus/eibar or by calling 943 67 02 49. Participation is free. Items must be used and in good condition, with a maximum of three items accepted per person. Proceeds from sales or deposited items will be returned after the market. Prices cannot exceed 700 euros, participants must be adults, and ID and phone number will be requested.
In the afternoon, from 5:00 PM to 7:30 PM, Eibar Klub Deportiboa will organize a children's road safety circuit and a scavenger hunt in Plaza Untzaga (or Plaza Errebal in case of rain). These activities are for children aged 5 to 12, and participants will need to bring a bicycle and/or scooter.
On September 22, "Car-Free Day" will be celebrated, and to encourage public transport use, the Udalbus service in Eibar will be free all day.
On the same day, at 6:30 PM, an open workshop for citizen participation will be held in Hall A of the Errebal building to present and discuss the latest version of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS). Eva Juez Garmendia, head of the Environment Department, explains that the campaign is part of the City Council's Action Plan for Climate and Sustainable Energy (PACES 2022-2030).
Meanwhile, the Mobility, Tourism, and Spatial Planning Department of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council is promoting the "Pon a punto tu bici con MUGI" initiative to foster more sustainable habits. On September 16, a van-workshop will be at Plaza Untzaga (10:30 AM - 2:00 PM) offering basic bicycle repairs to MUGI card holders. Two bicycles and 60 MUGI card recharges of 20 euros will also be raffled.
The City Council is in the final stages of developing its new Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS), a tool to plan the municipality's mobility and improve its energy, environmental, economic, social, and accessibility efficiency. The process has included citizen participation through digital surveys and open workshops.
