The Eibar City Council celebrates April 14th in Unzaga square, marking the 95th anniversary of the Second Republic, highlighting democratic memory and the city's historical role.

Today, Tuesday, the Eibar City Council commemorates the 95th anniversary of the proclamation of the Second Republic with an institutional event in Unzaga square, starting at 10:30 AM. This occasion is deeply symbolic for a city closely linked to democratic memory. The day will also feature the official inauguration of Eibar, Place of Democratic Memory, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.
The event will begin with a musical opening by violinist Mireia Garaigorta, who will perform Anda jaleo by Federico García Lorca. Following this, Jon Iraola, the mayor of Eibar, will offer a welcome as host of the commemoration, which will include representatives from various institutions.
Among the announced speakers is Arritxu Marañón, Vice-counselor for Human Rights, Memory, and Coexistence of the Basque Government. Esther Cosfak and Ibrahim el Adel will also participate, reading an excerpt from the Proclamation Act of the Second Republic and a reflective text on the Republic by Antonio Machado. Fernando Martínez, Secretary of State for Democratic Memory, will speak during one of the morning's central moments, focusing on the institutional recognition of the republican legacy and the preservation of democratic memory.
The cultural dimension of the tribute will again be present with another reference to Lorca, this time with a musical interpretation of Café de Chinitas. A highlight of the day will be the unveiling of the “Eibar Place of Democratic Memory” plaque, a gesture intended to provide public and permanent recognition of the city's historical significance. A floral offering will follow.
The program also includes a touch of Basque cultural heritage with an aurresku performed by dantzari Jon Alkain, accompanied by Asier Castelos, Ainhoa Urkizu, Xabier Zorrakin, and Germán Ereña, with txistu music. Pablo Bustinduy, Minister of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs, and Agenda 2030, will also participate. Mireia Garaigorta will conclude the event, performing Txoria Txori by Joxean Artze and Mikel Laboa on the violin, a piece of deep symbolic content that will close an event conceived as a remembrance, tribute, and democratic reaffirmation.
Separately, the PSE of Eibar is organizing a flag-raising ceremony at 11:30 AM at the headquarters of the Casa del Pueblo de Unzaga, followed by fireworks at 12:00 PM from Txantxa Zelai.
