Following the decision to close the former Gregorio Marañón building, a parent read a letter at the town council meeting expressing the concerns of families with students with special needs. "Our children are not numbers, nor are they files that can be moved from one place to another," they stated, denouncing the lack of adequate spaces for them in the lower institute, such as quiet areas, functional workshops, or regulation opportunities.
According to the parents, the institute is already "overcrowded," and they pointed out that temporary solutions, like marquees, are not dignified. They also warned that installing such modules reduces playground space.
“"It is neither ethical nor humane to announce something so important so late, as families are not given time to reorganize the students' lives."
Furthermore, they reported that two students were denied the opportunity to continue in the task learning classroom in April, warning that due to a lack of places, some students could be left at home for a year, with all the resulting disorganization, delays, and emotional strain. They also added that it is still unclear where the educational cycles will be relocated.
All political groups in the council expressed their support for the members of the educational community and emphasized the need to find solutions. Members of the EAJ announced they have contacted the Department of Education and are exploring "several alternatives." For their part, members of the Municipal Government reported that they will have a meeting this Thursday with the Delegate of Education for Álava, Aintzane Arrese, to discuss possible solutions.
The parents advocated for the need to "invest money in public education" and stressed that they are "ready to fight." Tomorrow, they will take the first step with a rally at 5 PM in the Herriko Plaza (Town Square).
