The ELA union has reported serious safety and health concerns at the Laudio Goikoa educational center, demanding urgent investment. According to the union, the school suffers from various deficiencies, including the presence of asbestos, outdated electrical installations, water quality issues (due to nickel), out-of-service restrooms, lack of an elevator, and deterioration of safety elements such as railings.
The union points out that the premises are used by students from both Vocational Training and the Task Learning Classroom. Therefore, ELA deems it essential to guarantee adequate conditions of accessibility, safety, and usability.
Although the Department of Education initially planned to close the Laudio Goikoa IES, public mobilization has led to the announcement that it will remain operational. However, the union has indicated that uncertainty among teachers about how to reconcile the planned works with academic activities has caused unease. ELA states that this situation has generated significant concern within the educational community.
In response, ELA has demanded strict control over health and safety areas. The union has requested the current Risk Assessment and its updates, as well as the preventive planning derived from it. They have also asked for technical reports on the building's condition, asbestos, water quality, electrical installations, and accessibility, along with information on measures to ensure the safety of staff and students. Furthermore, they seek details on the schedule and deadlines for the announced activities.
The union reminds that Law 31/1995 on the Prevention of Occupational Risks obliges the administration to guarantee the safety and health of workers. "Therefore, we have requested transparency, updated information, and effective preventive measures, as the safety of workers and students cannot be subject to future investments or administrative decisions," it added.
Additionally, ELA has recalled that since 2013, the management teams of Laudio IES have repeatedly requested repair and improvement works for the building. In the union's view, the investments made so far have been insufficient, and a significant and urgent intervention is necessary.
