Artziniega is poised to take a significant step in enhancing its sanitation system. The Basque Water Agency (URA) and the City Council have formalized an agreement to construct a collector that will link Gordéliz to the municipal network. This project, valued at nearly 5 million euros, aims to eliminate direct discharges into the Herrerías River and put an end to the use of several septic tanks currently in operation.
The project entails the construction of a new collector, approximately 2.5 kilometers in length, connecting Gordéliz and Artziniega. This infrastructure will enable wastewater from various areas within the municipality to be managed through the general sanitation network, rather than relying on smaller, independent systems.
This initiative will benefit Gordéliz, La Venta, San Antonio, and La Teja, ensuring their wastewater discharges are integrated into the municipal system. Consequently, all wastewater will reach the sanitation network, preventing direct pollution of the natural environment and improving the ecological health of the Herrerías River.
Beyond the new collector, the works will also serve to modernize parts of the municipality's water cycle infrastructure. The project includes the renovation of several sections of the supply and distribution network, as well as the replacement of a portion of the raw water pipeline connecting the Artziniega dam to the drinking water treatment plant (ETAP).
This is a long-awaited project. As early as 2022, URA initiated the bidding process for the design of this undertaking, which was then considered a key element for improving the municipality's sanitation. Now, with the agreement signed between the two institutions, the work is entering a new phase and moving closer to execution.
The Basque Water Agency will fully finance, contract, and technically direct the works. The budget amounts to 4,983,878.46 euros (including VAT), with an estimated execution period of 12 months.
In turn, the Artziniega City Council will provide the necessary land for the development of the project. Upon completion of the works, the new infrastructure will be managed and maintained by URBIDE.
The agreement was signed by the Director General of URA, Asier López Etxebarria, and the Mayor of Artziniega, Joseba Vivanco. Both institutions emphasize that this action will enhance the municipality's environmental health, eliminate discharge points, and modernize essential infrastructure for the town's future.
