Vehicle access to Bermeo's old port will be controlled by a video surveillance system from mid-June. With the implementation of this measure, it will be essential to have municipal authorization to enter during restricted hours.
For this reason, the City Council, led by EH Bildu-Guzan, has initiated the permit processing, which can be done in person at the Berhaz office or through the municipal electronic headquarters. Each person can register a maximum of two license plates and must also indicate the vehicle model. Applications, which will be resolved within a week, are open to citizens and activities directly linked to the port.
Specifically, authorization can be requested by residents in homes with direct access to the pier, users of moorings – who must provide documentation from Euskal Kirol Portuak (EKP) – and hospitality and commercial establishments. The Council has indicated that «if they are registered in the City Council's Economic Activities census, it will be verified ex officio». Users of the fishing sheds, who must prove their ownership, complete the list.
The local administration is also finalizing the implementation of a complementary system of temporary authorizations to address specific needs for accessing Portuzarra, with the aim that, from the start of the video surveillance system, all situations requiring entry to the area can be covered.
This measure complements the municipal initiative to limit vehicle traffic on the pier between one in the afternoon and six in the evening on weekends, holidays, and during vacation periods such as Easter and Christmas, as well as during the summer season, from June 15 to mid-September. The municipal government, led by Nadia Nemeh, thus seeks to prioritize pedestrian use and organize a pier «stressed» by tourist influx and the coexistence of cars, pedestrians, and the pier's own activities.
