Osakidetza will establish a virtual hospital at Santiago Hospital where doctors and nurses can simulate high-risk scenarios without endangering patient safety.

This new virtual hospital, to be located on the third floor of Santiago Hospital, will provide medical and nursing students and professionals with the opportunity to train in high-risk clinical situations, such as breech births or cardiorespiratory arrest. The aim is to enhance both technical and non-technical skills, including decision-making, communication, and teamwork, enabling them to act with greater safety and effectiveness in real-life scenarios.
The simulation area, spanning nearly 152 m2 with a budget of 196,348.24 euros, will feature multiple zones. These include multipurpose rooms that can be configured as critical care bays, operating rooms, emergency rooms, or general hospitalization rooms, all equipped with advanced manikins.
Additionally, there will be a control room where instructors can supervise and manage simulations in real-time using state-of-the-art audiovisual technology. A debriefing room will be available for analyzing the conducted simulations, helping participants identify knowledge gaps and assess their attitudes and reactions.
This will be Osakidetza's second virtual hospital, following the inauguration of a similar facility at Galdakao-Usansolo University Hospital two years ago. This project represents a step forward in professional training and, as stated by Enrique Bárez, general manager of OSI Araba, will also serve to "attract professionals."
