PQC is examining green hydrogen as an energy alternative for data centers, working with Petronor and Tecnalia on the H2Integra project. This initiative has received funding from the Department of Industry, Energy Transition and Sustainability of the Basque Government and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF 2021-2027).
The H2Integra project, completed in March 2026, has studied the feasibility of using green hydrogen as a primary energy source and as a backup for electricity supply failures. Petronor has contributed to defining options for sustainable hydrogen supply, while Tecnalia has identified hydrogen fuel cell suppliers to match data center redundancy requirements.
“"The high power demands in data centers compel us to delve deeper into finding sustainable, secure energy sources with continuity assurance."
The project has identified the potential of green hydrogen as an alternative for powering data center backup systems, although higher-capacity fuel cells still need to be developed to meet infrastructure demands. "There is still significant room for development, but green hydrogen can be a short-to-medium term solution," stated Unda.
PQC, founded in 1996, is an architectural engineering and consultancy firm specializing in data center design. In recent years, it has strengthened its commitment to research and technological development, addressing the challenge of adapting these infrastructures to new demands driven by artificial intelligence.
The recognition received at the 2026 ON Bizkaia Awards has highlighted PQC's work in seeking energy solutions for a constantly evolving sector. "The research and knowledge of potential alternative energy sources position us as a technology company in the design of the data center sector," affirmed Unda.
