“One million more midwives.” With such an expressive slogan, this collective celebrated its International Day yesterday with a clear demand: recognition for their work and the need to increase their numbers in Basque healthcare, as well as the necessary resources to develop their competencies in all areas of women's care.
The College of Nursing of Bizkaia acted as a spokesperson to disseminate the message of several of these professionals working in hospital centers in the territory. They stated that the work of these professionals requires time, presence, and real availability.

This comprehensive perspective was shared by a midwife from the same hospital complex, who emphasized that the postpartum period “is a time of adaptation” that “requires specialized training and very sensitive and empathetic care.”

In her experience, behind many difficulties with breastfeeding there is fatigue, fear, unfulfilled expectations, or high internal demands. Therefore, she considered it fundamental for mothers to feel heard “without judgment” and recalled that “each woman has her own rhythm and her own way of being a mother, and our role is to accompany, not to direct.”
