The Minister of Education, Begoña Pedrosa, presented the certificates for the XIX edition at Ekoetxea Urdaibai in Busturia. The event honored centers that integrate sustainability into their educational projects and daily operations.
Pedrosa emphasized that "educating in sustainability is educating in values, co-responsibility, and the capacity to transform the environment through knowledge, participation, and commitment." She highlighted its role in the Basque educational model and how the Agenda Escolar 2030 helps students understand global challenges and actively contribute to a more sustainable future.
The minister also pointed out the importance of recognizing "what our schools do well," commending the work of "teachers, centers, and students."
The Eskola Jasangarria certificate recognizes centers that have integrated sustainability as a strategic axis, valuing their trajectory in the Agenda Escolar 2030 and the commitment of the entire educational community. Centers must demonstrate the integration of sustainability in the curriculum, environmental management, student participation, and the involvement of families and staff.
According to the latest consolidated data, the Agenda Escolar 2030 program has been present in 470 educational centers across 126 municipalities in Euskadi, reaching over 220,000 students, approximately 60% of educational centers.
In this edition, Iraurgi stands out for its projects "Frigorífico Solidario-Basura Cero," "Sin Plástico," and "Basoeskola." Larramendi Ikastola utilizes its green spaces as an educational resource with initiatives like "¿La laguna está enferma?" Meanwhile, Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes promotes the "Semana sin plástico" to reduce plastic usage.
With the inclusion of these three centers, there are now 137 educational institutions in Euskadi holding the Eskola Jasangarria certificate, acknowledging their work in integrating sustainability into learning and empowering students in environmental care.
