The Barakaldo City Council has requested the imprisonment of the alleged thief who last Friday threatened several officers with a knife. The man was shot in the leg to subdue him after the taser proved ineffective. After being treated at Cruces Hospital for the bullet wound, he was released, but the Council believes that, due to his extensive criminal record —including shooting a Civil Guard officer some years ago—, new risks must be "avoided".
Furthermore, Mayor Amaia del Campo has also asked the municipal legal service for the City Council to act as a private prosecutor against the detainee for assaulting agents of authority. "We will not allow a criminal to threaten either residents or the Local Police with a knife," she stated.
“"We will not allow a criminal to threaten either residents or the Local Police with a knife."
This step forward comes five days after the incident, which took place on the footbridge over the Desierto train station, after the urban guard received a report of a robbery at a supermarket in the El Carmen area. This very morning, all political groups met at the request of the Citizen Security department. From this council, held by the socialists who govern alongside the PNV, the City Council was urged to act as a private prosecutor "in criminal proceedings or serious criminal acts," as a "tool to defend public interests."
The detainee from last Friday, identified as L. M. R., has an extensive criminal record, notably his involvement in a wave of robberies in the town, committed among other places in the rooms of Cruces Hospital. For this reason, the Council has considered that, based on his background and the severity of these recent events, his provisional re-entry into prison should be requested, pending trial, to avoid endangering citizens and local officers again.
Ertzaintza resources attended the scene and took charge of the operation, following the protocol for jurisdiction and transparency. In addition, the Local Police has launched an internal investigation, together with the company supplying the five taser guns that the urban guard has been using for two years. They are analyzing why none of the shots fired with this weapon had an effect, producing the usual discharge that facilitates subduing a person. Initially, the possibility that the thickness of the man's clothing prevented it was considered, but now it is also being examined whether there was any failure in the devices or their use.
