The Port Authority of Pasaia had planned to conclude its 2026 cruise season with the arrival of the 'MS Deutschland'. This transatlantic liner was scheduled for a stopover as part of a 17-day voyage that began on the 12th in Cuxhaven, Germany. The ship was arriving from Santander and was set to depart for Bordeaux in the late afternoon.
Its visit had sparked curiosity among the bay's residents due to the ship's history and elegance. Minutes before eight in the morning, many people were gathered at the port awaiting its entry. However, access was denied as it required assistance from Facal's tugboats, which were engaged in extinguishing a fire in the scrap metal located at Lezo 1 pier.
“"It's a shame we can't see it. It was worth it."
Maritime enthusiasts could only glimpse its silhouette from a distance. The 'MS Deutschland' is famously known as the 'Cruise of Happiness', the title of the popular German television series 'Kreuzfahrt ins Glück' (aired from 2007 to 2024) which was filmed onboard.
Built in Kiel in 1998 and christened by former German President Richard von Weizsäcker, the vessel is currently part of the Phoenix shipping company's fleet. It is regarded as a five-star German cruise ship, noted for its magnificent architecture, classic maritime design, and meticulous interior decoration.
Measuring 175.49 meters in length and 23 meters in beam, it features seven decks designed in classic, art nouveau, and art deco styles. Guests have access to various restaurants and bars offering a diverse culinary selection, aiming to make them feel 'at home'.
Onboard, entertainment is a priority, with day and night programs that include creative workshops, lectures, games, a library, sports facilities such as a gym, spa, indoor and outdoor pools, and a sauna with sea views.
Ultimately, the cruise ship proceeded to Bilbao as an alternative to its planned stop in Pasaia. 'Hopefully, it can return next year. We were left wanting to see it,' commented a local resident.
