Barakaldo City Council will invest €51,834.59 to upgrade the exterior lighting in Arrontegi, Bizkaia, and Errioxa streets with the installation of new, energy-efficient LED fixtures.

The Barakaldo City Council (Bizkaia) will renovate the exterior lighting on Arrontegi, Bizkaia, and Errioxa streets. The aim is to modernize the installations, improve lighting quality, and advance the municipality's sustainability and energy efficiency goals. This project will require an investment of €51,834.59, including VAT, fully funded by municipal resources.
The current lights will be replaced with new, last-generation LED equipment, which are more efficient and environmentally friendly. The maximum estimated timeframe for completing the works is 18 weeks from their commencement.
Asier Umaran, the councilor for Municipal Services, explained that "the objective of this intervention is to increase visibility and lighting uniformity in the affected streets, thereby enhancing safety for both pedestrians and vehicles. Furthermore, the use of LED technology will lead to a significant reduction in electricity consumption and the carbon footprint associated with the service, aligning with the council's commitments to energy sustainability and the fight against climate change."
A total of 58 new light points will be installed. On Arrontegi and Bizkaia streets, 33 lights will be placed at a height of nine meters, along with 14 environmental lights at a four-meter height. On Errioxa street, eight pathway lights and three environmental lights will be installed, adhering to similar height criteria to ensure adequate illumination of the roadway and pedestrian areas.
In addition to replacing the light points, the project includes a complete renewal of the internal wiring of the lighting columns and the installation of new protective fuse boxes to improve the overall safety and reliability of the infrastructure.
Separately, Barakaldo City Council will also enhance the lighting at the main entrance to the Botanical Garden, investing €7,507.20 in the main access. New lighting points will be added to the initial section of the pathway, which currently lacks sufficient brightness. The initiative aims to install the necessary lighting and create the required conduits and boxes to bolster user safety and comfort, particularly during low-visibility hours, and to ensure a safer and more accessible entrance to this key city green space.
