The Irun City Council will strengthen control over electric scooters with new technical resources for the Local Police, aiming to improve safety for both users and pedestrians.

Irun is intensifying its supervision of personal mobility vehicles (VMPs), particularly electric scooters, through its Local Police force. These new measures are designed to ensure compliance with current regulations and enhance safety for all road users.
Since last October 9th, the Irun Local Police have been equipped with a high-precision portable dynamometer. This device allows officers to verify the speed of electric scooters directly on the street, ensuring they adhere to established limits, such as the 25 kilometers per hour maximum. Vehicles found in violation of the regulations may be impounded.
Furthermore, the reform of the General Traffic Regulations, which took effect on October 1st, introduces new requirements for electric scooter users. These include a minimum age of 15 years, mandatory helmet use, the requirement for a reflective vest in low visibility conditions, and proper vehicle lighting.
The Security department also reminds the public that electric scooters and bicycles are prohibited from using sidewalks, a key aspect that will be closely monitored. The goal is to foster safe coexistence among different mobility modes and ensure appropriate use of public space through specific enforcement operations.
