The 2027 Participatory Budgets process has broken the participation record since 2017, when voting was enabled with the Irun Txartela (Irun Card). Between October 2nd and 6th, a total of 12,651 votes were collected across the general and youth processes, with over 3,063 voters participating.
The Open Government and Citizen Services department has published the results on the municipal website. The most voted proposals focus on improving the maintenance and creation of green spaces in the city, as well as enhancing urban safety and continuing musical initiatives for Irun's youth.
Delegate Jon Ugarte highlighted that "breaking a record shows that this participatory process is more alive than ever. Citizens recognize the initiative as truly valuable for the municipality's future, supporting projects that will improve our common spaces. It is very gratifying to see how the people of Irun get involved in making improvements to the city, which is precisely how we understand Participatory Budgets: through active listening and the desire to make Irun the city we want it to be."
This year's figures significantly surpass those of the previous edition, with a 26.8% increase in votes and a 27.4% increase in participants.
It is worth noting that a total of 1,500,000 euros from the Municipal Budget has been allocated for these projects: 1,300,000 euros for the general process and 200,000 euros for youth proposals (ages 16-30).
In the general process, a total of 11,582 votes were counted, compared to 9,977 in the previous process. Among the most voted projects are the improvement of sports center maintenance (989 votes), the design project for outdoor swimming pools in San Miguel-Anaka (973), enhancements to city lighting (945), the creation of green areas with native trees (859), and the installation of surveillance cameras in parks (845).
Meanwhile, the youth process garnered 1,069 votes, surpassing the 932 from 2025 (no voting took place in 2026). Top youth proposals include the Elektroplaza 2027 festival (118), the organization of street parties (108), concerts and performing arts proposals (95), a study on co-living models to facilitate housing access (88), and summer activities like jet skiing and surfing (82).
