During the official presentation held at the Irun City Council, details of the 52nd edition of the Vuelta al Bidasoa were unveiled. This significant cycling event will run from Friday, May 8th, to Sunday, May 10th, and this year, the participation of fourteen cyclists from the region has been announced, marking the highest number of local riders in recent decades.
These local cyclists will have the privilege of competing on home ground in the most prestigious race of its category at the state level. Participants include Mikel Arriet Atondo (Etxalar), Igor Bilbao (Irun), Aitor Igoa (Sunbila), Adur Tapia (Irun), Joan Cardona (Hondarribia), Peru Garro (Hendaia), Oier Ugartemendia (Irun), Oier Handong Arana (Irun), Mikel Lizasoain (Donamaria), Mikel Bermejo (Irun), Oihan Apeztegia (Sunbila), Unax Larraburu (Sunbila), Eneit Bertiz (Sunbila), and Unai Barrio (Irun).
Regarding the race route, it will consist of three stages. The first, on Friday, will be a time trial between Guadalupe and Jaizkibel in Hondarribia. On Saturday, the peloton will face a long 163-kilometer stage, starting in Arantza and finishing at Lizarrietako Lepoa, overcoming four categorized climbs: Ziga, Belate, Orokieta, and Lizarrieta. Finally, the closing stage on Sunday will follow the classic route between Hendaia and Irun, ascending the climbs of Arkale, Aritxulegi, Agiña, Piedad, San Martzial, and Erlaitz.
At the institutional event, the mayor of Irun was accompanied by the mayor of Hondarribia, the sports councilor of Hendaia, the Director of Sports of Gipuzkoa, the mayor of Arantza, and the acting mayor of Etxalar. All emphasized the importance of the Bidasoa Itzulia as a unifying element for the region and a promoter of sporting values.
