The Mayor of Irun is embarking on the new political term with a clear objective: to advance the city's transformation. The key areas of focus will be housing, sustainable mobility, and public safety. These strategic pillars encompass some of Irun's most significant future projects, all aimed at reshaping urban spaces and improving the quality of life in its neighborhoods. "Irun is undergoing a transformation, and this new term, we aim to take important steps to ensure this change benefits all neighborhoods and enhances residents' lives. We have major projects ahead, alongside numerous actions addressing daily needs," stated the Mayor.
Housing will be a central priority. The City Council will continue to promote new developments to increase housing supply, with notable projects planned in areas such as San Miguel-Anaka, Mendipe, and Korrokoitz, collectively aiming for 695 public housing units for purchase and rent. Furthermore, a new procedure will be introduced to facilitate the conversion of commercial spaces into residential units, responding to evolving housing needs and optimizing existing urban areas.
The strategic Vía Irun project remains a key focus. During this term, the modification of the General Plan will receive final approval, solidifying a crucial initiative for regenerating a central part of Irun and creating new opportunities. "We want Irun to remain a city where people can live, grow, and build their life projects. This requires generating housing, but also continuing to transform and regenerate our neighborhoods, utilizing spaces effectively and fostering new opportunities," emphasized the Mayor.
In terms of mobility, this term will see the significant launch of the new train and bus station, an infrastructure poised to profoundly change the city. The Council also plans to complete the works for the Belartza parking facility and finalize the ordinance for the Low Emission Zone, promoting more orderly, sustainable, and contemporary mobility. "The new station will become a reality for us to see and enjoy this term. It's a city project, but also one that aims to make life easier for those who live, work, or visit Irun," she explained.
Security is another major focus. Priorities include increasing the Local Police force by 15 officers and implementing a new policing model designed to enhance presence and citizen attention. Efforts will also be intensified against repeat offenses through new police tools.
Access to the SIRAJ system and the possibility of intervening as a private prosecutor in certain cases will improve prevention and response to serious and repeated crimes. Additionally, communication between the Irun City Council and the Ertzaintza (Basque Police) has been strengthened via the new Morphobis system, enhancing arrest effectiveness. Security will also be addressed through urban environment improvements, reclaiming public spaces, and fostering more cared-for and active neighborhoods. "We want a more accessible and present Local Police, and we also want to continue reclaiming spaces and improving our neighborhoods. A well-maintained, vibrant city with quality spaces is a safer city," noted the Mayor.
Beyond these three axes, the new political term will feature a fourth line of work centered on people and the services that make Irun a pleasant and livable city. Key initiatives include the commencement of construction for the Arbes senior residence, aimed at expanding and improving care for the elderly. The Emigration building in the San Miguel neighborhood is also set to open, consolidating various services: a space for seniors, a Haurtxoko (children's center), and a venue for the neighborhood association. "This project is deeply connected to the neighborhood and its people. Within one space, we will offer services for three generations: our seniors, children, and the families and residents of San Miguel," the Mayor elaborated.
The city's activity will also play a significant role. Christmas celebrations will once again be a major focus, both for generating street activity and dynamism and for their impact on commerce and the urban economy. "A city is transformed not only by major works. It is also transformed by caring for people, supporting our elders, generating activity, maintaining our services, and ensuring Irun is vibrant year-round," she emphasized.
All these initiatives will be fundamentally supported by the 2027 Municipal Budgets, which will serve as the tool to translate the city's priorities into resources, enabling these projects and numerous other actions related to social services, culture, urban maintenance, and public services. "A budget is not just a figure. It is the instrument that allows us to turn priorities into resources and make the projects Irun needs a reality. The 2027 Budgets must serve the needs of our neighborhoods and our residents," she stated.
The Mayor has framed all these actions within a core idea: Irun has a city project and must continue to defend its interests. "Irun is a city with a strategic position, with its own needs and challenges. We will continue to defend what is rightfully Irun's and its citizens', wherever necessary, and with an open hand to work and reach agreements when possible," she affirmed.
The new political term will therefore be defined by an agenda that blends major projects with daily actions, keeping neighborhoods and people at the forefront. The common goal is to continue transforming and driving Irun forward, building a city where people can live, pursue life projects, work, and enjoy themselves – a more livable, safer, better-connected city with more opportunities for everyone.
