The Irun City Council has donated a tricycle featuring a tilting platform for wheelchairs to the associations Nagusilan (volunteer retirees) and Balazta (an organization promoting cycling). This vehicle will be used in the 'Nagusikleta' project, which aims to provide healthy rides for residents and users of elderly centers in Hondarribia and Irun, with volunteers operating the electric tricycles.
This initiative stems from a request made by the Irun Citizen Forum during the Participatory Budgets process. The inclusion of a tilting platform was deemed necessary to ensure that individuals using wheelchairs could also partake in the healthy rides offered by 'Nagusikleta'. Irun is now the first municipality in Gipuzkoa to possess such a tricycle capable of transporting both standard and electric wheelchairs.
This tricycle, costing 15,000 euros, complements another tricycle previously donated for the 'Nagusikleta' project about eighteen months ago. The project draws inspiration from the international movement 'Cycling without age' and holds significant social value.
Josu Iguiñiz, the delegate for Social Welfare, stated, "This project facilitates the active participation of older adults in society, particularly those experiencing isolation and unwanted loneliness. Our department actively works to ensure this group feels included, and initiatives like these help foster more activities for seniors."
