The Irun City Council has announced that the Irunbus service will introduce a new Line 5 connecting the city from north to south and will increase the frequency of night buses on Saturdays, starting this summer.

The Irun City Council has confirmed significant improvements to the Irunbus service for the summer, including the launch of a new Line 5 and enhanced night bus services on Saturdays. These new services are made possible by the awarding of a 20-month contract to Semura Bus S.L., valued at over 3.4 million euros.
The new Line 5 will operate between Elizatxo Avenue and Ficoba, connecting both ends of the city through the center with a frequency of every half hour. Additionally, this line will serve the Mendibil neighborhood, addressing a long-standing request from local residents. The main stop for this service will be located in Fermín Calbeton.

"The Irunbus service is one of the most in-demand services. We have always believed that sustainable mobility and access to it is a right. We have made investments in recent years and increased lines. We needed to take another leap, and we have done so now."

Furthermore, Line 1 will also be reinforced with the addition of an electric bus. The aim is not to increase frequency but to ensure the current 15-minute frequency, especially during peak hours, to guarantee that all passengers can access the service. In addition, the Gautxori night bus service, which runs from Behobia to Ventas in Irun, will double its frequency from hourly to every half hour. This measure will be implemented within a maximum of two months from the contract award.
The 20-month concession period is notably shorter than usual for such services. The City Council explained that this timeframe is considered necessary to complete the process of enabling the municipal bus depots acquired in Araso, with a particular focus on ensuring sufficient electrical power to supply the bus lines.
