The draw for the final bracket of the Handball King's Cup has been scheduled for May 4th in Alicante. The event will take place at one of the most distinguished venues in the Alicantine capital, the Real Liceo Casino, located on the La Explanada promenade. There, Bidasoa Irun will learn its opponent for the quarter-finals, having qualified in Puente Genil, and its potential path to the final.
The King's Cup finalized its bracket this Wednesday, following the completion of the six matches corresponding to the Third Round. Despite Bidasoa facing the most challenging away trip and visiting a court like Puente Genil, the team coached by Álex Mozas effectively neutralized their opponent midway through the second half, thanks to strong goalkeeping and counter-attacks. They surged from 24-23 to 25-30 in nine minutes, crucial for the final 30-36 scoreline.
These six goals represent the second-largest difference of the night, only surpassed by Nava's 38-31 victory over Ademar de León. This result qualifies the Segovian team for the first time in its history for a Cup final phase. It will be the sole debutant in this edition, as, unlike the last two, there will be no teams from the División de Honor Plata.
FC Barcelona's reserve team, Barça Atlètic, put up a good fight against Recoletas Atlético Valladolid (29-32), and the other second-tier team in this round, Anaitasuna, came close to qualifying against Torrelavega (30-31). In the other two Asobal team clashes, besides Bidasoa and Nava, the most notable outcome was the elimination of two teams vying for European competition next season: Logroño fell in Cuenca (31-30) and Granollers suffered the same fate in Huesca (35-34).
The draw on May 4th at 13:00 will have one condition, as announced by the RFEBM: the reigning champion, FC Barcelona, and the organizer, EON Alicante, will be seeded, thus appearing on opposite sides of the bracket. The Cup champion secures a spot in European competition (EHF European League), and if they already qualify via the League, the runner-up takes that spot. If both have qualified for Europe, the spot will go to the next highest-ranked team in the League.
