The plenary session of the Social Council of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) approved this Wednesday the public university's incorporation into the European University Alliance Enlight, following a proposal from the Economy and Finance Committee. This alliance is formed by ten prestigious European universities, aiming to transform higher education, promote equity, and address societal challenges through academic innovation, sustainable research, and excellence.
In addition to UPV/EHU, the alliance includes universities from Ghent (Belgium), Bordeaux (France), Bern (Switzerland), Comenius University Bratislava (Slovakia), Galway (Ireland), Groningen (Netherlands), Göttingen (Germany), Tartu (Estonia), and Uppsala (Sweden). Collectively, these universities gather over 350,000 students.
As reported by the Social Council of UPV/EHU, Enlight is based on an international non-profit legal entity headquartered in Belgium, offering various benefits and programs for the university community while fully respecting the institutional autonomy of each participant.
The association has developed several mobility programs in recent years, enabling students to undertake international studies, modules, and collaborative projects at any of the ten member universities. Furthermore, the international alliance conducts various research projects and scholarships, fostering the development of multidisciplinary networks through financial support calls and exchange projects. It has also developed social impact projects, supported by a platform for measuring research impact and best practices.
On another note, during the plenary session of the Social Council of UPV/EHU, and following the proposal of the Economy and Finance Committee, eight budget modifications were also approved, totaling over 112,000 euros. Five of these proposals concern operations under 10,000 euros for the purchase of furniture and teaching and scientific equipment, as well as for the operational expenses of UPV/EHU's research projects, amounting to nearly 25,500 euros. Additionally, three modifications exceeding 10,000 euros were approved, with a balance of over 86,600 euros, intended for the acquisition of scientific and sports equipment for various departments of the Basque public university.
Moreover, several additional remuneration supplements have been allocated to university professors and researchers. The council also decided to distribute five student collaboration scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year among university departments, based on the rankings of departments obtained according to the maximum scores awarded by the Basque Government to the UPV/EHU's Research Groups within the Basque University System. Accordingly, the following departments have been awarded a scholarship: Arts and Humanities (Philology and History), Health Sciences (Pediatrics), Experimental Sciences (Organic Chemistry I), Social and Legal Sciences (Philosophy), and Engineering and Architecture (Electricity and Electronics).
