Álava offers refreshing alternatives to beaches with its natural pools and river spots in Fresnedo, Espejo, Sarria, and Berantevilla, perfect for escaping the heat.

While Álava lacks a coastline, it provides numerous opportunities to cool off during the hot summer months within its territory. Beyond municipal pools or reservoirs, there are enchanting natural spots ideal for a summer day out. These locations, far from urban crowds, are gaining popularity for their tranquility and beautiful natural settings.
The river pools of Fresnedo, located in Santa Cruz de Campezo and accessible via the A-132 from Vitoria-Gasteiz, feature the clear waters of the Ega river. This natural area includes two recreational zones connected by a wooden bridge, often used as a diving platform. Amenities include tables, barbecue areas, fountains, a basketball court, and children's play areas. A bar serves food during the summer.
Near Retes de Llanteno, between Artziniega and Amurrio, lie the pools of the Herrerías river. After passing the municipality, follow the road to kilometer 54, where a track on the right leads to the riverbank. A short walk and a river crossing bring visitors to the main pool.
The river pools of Espejo, in Valdegovía, are situated along the Omecillo river. In addition to the swimming area, there is a recreational zone with tables, barbecues, and children's play equipment. The river also offers opportunities for canoeing, and parking is available on both sides.
Within the Gorbea Natural Park, the Zaldibartxo pools, also known as the Sarria pools, offer the cool waters of the Baias river. They are perfect for hotter days, though perhaps too cold for the most sensitive. Access involves parking the car and walking along a track.
Lastly, the natural pool in Berantevilla, formed by the Ayuda river within the Parque Fluvial de Linares, is another excellent choice. It features picnic areas and barbecue facilities, making it ideal for a full day immersed in nature.
