Number of Companies in Euskadi Decreases in March Compared to Previous Year

According to the Confebask report, Euskadi has 36 fewer companies than in March 2025 and 1,600 fewer than pre-pandemic levels.

The number of companies registered with the Social Security in Euskadi reached 57,293 in March, marking a decrease of 31 from the previous month and 36 compared to March 2025, according to a Confebask report.

This decline interrupts two consecutive months of year-on-year increases. When compared to the pre-pandemic situation in February 2020, there are still 1,600 fewer companies, indicating that only 24% of the lost businesses have been recovered. These figures are drawn from the latest report on the evolution of the business fabric in Euskadi, compiled by the Basque employers' association Confebask.
Geographically, in March, the number of companies increased in Bizkaia but decreased in Álava and Gipuzkoa. Similarly, when comparing with March 2025, Bizkaia saw an increase, while Álava and Gipuzkoa experienced declines.
Against pre-pandemic data (February 2020), the most significant drop occurred in Álava, with a 3.8% reduction and 367 fewer companies. Bizkaia saw a 1.9% decrease (590 fewer companies), and Gipuzkoa also recorded a 1.9% drop (391 fewer companies).
Regarding self-employed individuals, Euskadi registered an increase of 494 people in March, the best figure for a March month, bringing the total to 166,277. However, this still represents a 0.1% year-on-year decrease. Since February 2020, the number of self-employed individuals has fallen by 3,967, a reduction of 2.3%.
Concerning companies in insolvency proceedings, 2025 saw 295 Basque companies in this situation, a 2.1% increase from 2024. This growth is lower than that recorded nationwide, where the increase was 5%. By sector, in 2025, the number of companies in insolvency rose in industry (+11.7% and 67 companies) and services (+4% and 183 companies), but decreased in construction (-19.6% and 41 companies).
