During the general strike mobilizations on March 17, several individuals wrote 'soldata doinuak' (decent wages) on the lower part of the monument. These striking red letters remained visible for three weeks on one of the most iconic monuments in the Alavese capital.
At the time, the Department of Culture had already warned that specialized cleaning and suitable weather conditions were required. These conditions have been met during a sunny Easter week, allowing the work to commence, at an approximate cost of 3,000 euros.
It is also worth noting that at least one person has been identified in connection with these paint marks. The investigation was carried out by the Local Police, in collaboration with the Ertzaintza, following a complaint from the department led by the PNV member Sonia Díaz de Corcuera.
The Monument to the Battle of Vitoria was constructed in 1917 and was not intended to last more than a century. Currently, it exhibits numerous damages that have placed it on the Red List. Furthermore, the lack of maintenance over recent decades has contributed to its deterioration. Renovating it would cost between 360,000 and 400,000 euros, and although the Culture councilor assured in 2025 that it would be renovated, there is no set date for it yet.
