A prominent musician with a long career in the rock world has chosen Laguardia as his personal sanctuary, according to an article published by National Geographic. This village, located in southern Álava, with its rich history and serene atmosphere, serves as an escape for the artist.
According to the magazine, the musician married his current wife in Laguardia in 2024. This charming village in Rioja Alavesa, with approximately 1,400 inhabitants, is perched on a hill, surrounded by vineyards and boasting an almost intact medieval layout. Its foundation in the 10th century was driven by the need to protect the ancient Kingdom of Navarre.
The municipality features a walled enclosure with five access points and perfectly ordered streets connecting squares and cantons. Among its attractions are the churches of Santa María de los Reyes and San Juan Bautista, as well as its distinctive town hall.
Furthermore, Laguardia is a true wine kingdom, with an impressive network of underground wineries, perfectly equipped to preserve wine in optimal conditions. It is estimated that there are around 300 underground cellars or caves, with various specific sources citing 232 medieval caves (10th-11th centuries) beneath its houses and streets.
Beyond the urban center, the lagoons of Laguardia are the main point of natural interest. This is a biotop of great ecological value where various animal species, including migratory birds and amphibians, coexist. These areas are also ideal for hiking trails among vineyards and narrow paths, allowing visitors to appreciate the wetlands of Rioja Alavesa in all their splendor.
