Choosing a hiking route in Álava can be challenging due to the region's natural richness, but the specialized magazine Viajar has highlighted the ascent to Mount Gorbeia as the top choice, combining nature and history.

Selecting a single hiking route in Álava is often difficult due to the territory's abundant natural beauty. For this reason, Viajar magazine, a publication specializing in travel and tourism, has singled out the ascent to Mount Gorbeia as the best route, describing it as one of the most spectacular experiences available in all of Euskadi.
This location, situated between the territories of Álava and Bizkaia, is part of the Bocinero Mountains, a group of peaks steeped in history and tradition that hold significant importance in Basque geography. The journey begins at the Murua Quarries, near Zigoitia, covering a round trip distance of 12 to 14 kilometers.
Along the path, hikers will encounter points of interest such as the Mairuelegorreta cave, linked to ancient festivities, and the Arraba Meadows, a pasture area surrounded by mountains. From there, the final stretch towards the Gorbeia Cross begins, a 17-meter metallic structure that crowns the summit and serves as the mountain's primary symbol.
At an altitude of over 1,400 meters, the summit of Gorbeia offers breathtaking views, including natural parks like Aizkorri and Anboto. This route, winding through forests, meadows, and mountains, provides an unparalleled experience for both amateur and experienced hikers.
The Gorbeia Natural Park, home to this mountain, is the largest in Euskadi, spanning over 20,000 hectares. Within the Alavese region, it encompasses the towns of Zuia, Zigoitia, and Urkabustaiz. The park was designated a natural park in 1994 due to its high ecological value and scenic beauty.
