In Vitoria-Gasteiz, approximately 60,000 daily bicycle trips are made, according to the latest Mobility Survey by the Basque Government. Cycling now represents between 8% and 9% of daily journeys and is part of the routine for thousands of residents. It is used for travel to the city center, school, errands, or for moving between neighborhoods.
The main challenge now lies in commuting to work. Many people can easily navigate the city center or short urban routes, but reaching areas like Júndiz, the Álava Technology Park, or certain industrial estates by bike remains more complicated. Simply owning a bike is not enough; a safe, direct, and comfortable route is necessary.
Vitoria boasts nearly 200 kilometers of cycling network, and 97% of the population has a bike lane within 250 meters of their home. The city has a broad foundation, but there are still routes that are cut off, inconvenient intersections, and connections that do not always meet the daily needs of those who must arrive at work at a specific time.
Parking also plays a role. VG Biziz exceeded 327,000 uses in the past year, a 28% increase from the previous year, and already has over 3,400 users. For those commuting to work, the ability to leave their bicycle in a secure space for hours can be the deciding factor between using it daily or continuing to opt for a car.
The City Council has indicated that improvements are ongoing for the cycling access to the Álava Technology Park and the Júndiz industrial estate. Gasteiz already cycles a lot, but the pending leap is to make cycling to work no longer an option solely for the highly committed, but a normal, safe, and practical alternative for more residents.
