The spring weather and sunshine have energized associations and residents in Urretxu and Zumarraga, prompting the organization of numerous events that leave locals feeling overwhelmed, more stressed than during the weekdays.
The second to last Saturday in May saw the convergence of the Diversity Festival of Zumarraga, the Xabier Ormazabal mountain festival, a Basque duathlon qualifier, and a concert by the local group Sin Perdón.
Last weekend was even more impressive: Friday marked the start of the festivals in the upper neighborhoods of Zumarraga. On Saturday, these festivities coincided with the Diversity Festival of Urretxu, a tribute to Mitxel Badiola and the founding members of Urola, and a concert by the Urretxu music band with Sorotan Bele.
On Sunday, in addition to the festivals in Zumarraga's upper neighborhoods, the Oleta mountain festival and the memorial hike for Iñaki Beitia took place. The following week promises more activity with boxing matches and pelota games.
The festivals in Zumarraga's upper neighborhoods, which had ceased a decade ago, have been revived by a group of residents, mostly young people. With support from the Town Council, the La Amistad society, the El Salvador social center, and local restaurateurs, the festivals have been a resounding success, as has the Diversity Festival of Urretxu, featuring dance performances, workshops, and food stalls that attracted hundreds.
Furthermore, since Saturday afternoon, the main football field at the Argixao stadium has been named after Mitxel Badiola. The ceremony was attended by Badiola's family, who passed away two years ago, and representatives from both town councils, Urola, and Real Sociedad. Additionally, the founding members of Urola were honored, and the Urola first team played against the Real's youth team.
Immediately after, the Urretxu band and Sorotan Bele performed in Urretxu's Gernikako Arbola square before hundreds of spectators. On Sunday, over 1,400 mountaineers participated in the memorial hike for Iñaki Beitia, and Mount Oleta hosted the Trinitate Eguna festival.
