According to Aena data, Foronda Airport has achieved its best March on record for passenger numbers. A total of 25,648 passengers passed through the airport, marking a significant 45.4% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, 2025.
In terms of operations, the airport registered 1,132 take-offs and landings, representing a 15% rise from March 2025. For the entire first quarter, passenger traffic reached 67,465 travelers, an increase of 32.3% compared to the same period in 2025.
However, the cargo sector presents a less optimistic picture. Freight volumes saw a 1.8% decrease in March, with the year-on-year cumulative figure showing a 0.6% decline. The Vitoria infrastructure handled 16,864 tons of air cargo, which is 1.1% less than in the first quarter of 2025, and a 7.6% reduction when compared to 2023.
While the surge in passenger traffic is the most visible aspect for the public, Foronda has historically been a key hub for cargo transport. Despite maintaining its position as the fourth-largest airport in this segment, it has experienced years of stagnation in freight movement, particularly since the end of the pandemic, with its peak recorded in 2022. DHL remains the primary logistics operator at Foronda, while other operators have a more symbolic presence.
