The president of the Provincial Council of Burgos, Borja Suárez, has called on the Basque Country and the PNV to respect the Statute of Autonomy of Castilla y León, warning that the request for a referendum to integrate Treviño into Álava sets a "dangerous precedent."
The president of the Provincial Council of Burgos, Borja Suárez, has criticized statements made by the PNV during the celebration of Trebiñu Eguna in La Puebla de Arganzón. In these statements, the PNV announced its intention to request a referendum from Madrid to end what they consider the "anomaly" of Treviño's belonging to Castilla y León.
“
"These statements confirm the malicious intentions of Basque nationalism regarding Treviño, which has been accused of disrespecting the people of Castilla y León, Burgos, and Treviño alike."
Suárez reiterated that the process of territorial cession is "enshrined, protected, guaranteed, and shielded" by the Statute of Autonomy of Castilla y León. He asserted that this statute serves as Burgos's defense against what it perceives as an "attack outside the bounds of legality."
The president of the Provincial Council of Burgos urged the Basque Country to respect the Statute of Autonomy, just as all organic laws are respected in Burgos. He emphasized that "we are talking about serious matters here; we are talking about the identity, history, property, and territory of a people," referring to Castilla y León and Burgos.
“
"Respecting the rules of the game we have established, any debate is possible."
Suárez affirmed that the Provincial Council aims for the residents of Treviño to have the same services and opportunities as other provincial residents, advocating for a unifying rather than divisive administration.
