The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has rejected Elkarrekin's proposal to analyze the conservation status of the Plaza de los Fueros and define intervention criteria for its 50th anniversary.

The Plenary Session of the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council this morning rejected the motion presented by Elkarrekin, which aimed to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the conservation status of the Plaza de los Fueros and define medium and long-term intervention criteria for its 50th anniversary.
The motion did not pass, with votes in favor from Elkarrekin and PP, against from PNV and PSE-EE, and an abstention from EH Bildu.
The proposal intended to evaluate the current state of the complex, detect possible deterioration, and prepare for its conservation. Garbiñe Ruiz, councilor for Elkarrekin, argued that caring for the Plaza de los Fueros is also caring for "a fundamental part of the cultural and urban identity of Gasteiz," recalling its connection to architect Luis Peña Ganchegui and sculptor Eduardo Chillida.
The municipal government, formed by PNV and PSE-EE, rejected the comprehensive study proposal. While acknowledging the square's value, they argued that there are no signs of structural damage to justify a larger intervention. César Fernández de Landa (PNV) noted the need for maintenance due to the passage of time, such as minor cracks or weathered stones, but considered it not a "matter of state." His coalition partner, Borja Rodríguez (PSE-EE), suggested using the anniversary to highlight the space through educational and cultural actions.
EH Bildu shared the recognition of the plaza as an architecturally and artistically valuable complex but proposed recovering the memory of the former Abasto Market to better explain the city's urban evolution. The party believes the current issue can be addressed with adequate maintenance, controlling vegetation and humidity.
The PP supported Elkarrekin's motion, with councilor Alfredo Iturricha criticizing the square's condition, mentioning cracks and cleaning issues, and arguing that the 50th anniversary is an opportunity to "move from words to deeds."
