El Boulevard, the shopping center in Vitoria-Gasteiz, has initiated a new environmental awareness campaign aimed at introducing urban biodiversity to families in a simple, practical, and participatory manner. Under the slogan “With you, we make the city bloom”, an educational exhibition and several free workshops will be offered from June 12th to 20th.
This initiative aligns with World Environment Day and focuses on small, often invisible, yet crucial allies for ecosystem balance. These activities complement the efforts by the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council to promote urban biodiversity, including projects to study pollinators and adjustments to mowing schedules in green areas.
The main activity will take place at El Boulevard's Plaza Nodal. Visitors can explore an educational exhibition explaining the importance of pollinators and learn about small daily actions to support biodiversity, such as planting suitable flowers, creating shelters, and utilizing balconies and terraces for green spaces.
Two free family workshops will be held: “Make the city bloom”, where seed bombs will be created for later use (June 12th, 18:00-20:00; and June 13th, 12:00-14:00 and 18:00-20:00). The second workshop, “Insect Hotels: Small refuges for big allies”, will focus on building insect hotels (June 19th, 18:00-20:00; and June 20th, 12:00-14:00 and 18:00-20:00).
El Boulevard integrates sustainability into its daily management as part of CBRE's Caring for Communities program. The center conducts annual actions related to sustainability, responsible consumption, and energy saving, and operates selective waste collection systems. It holds certifications such as UNE-EN ISO 14001:2015 and BREEAM in Use, and is a signatory to the Vitoria-Gasteiz Green Pact.
Furthermore, 869 solar panels will be installed on the roof before the end of summer to generate approximately 17.2% of the energy consumption from renewable sources, aiming to reduce its carbon footprint. These efforts are part of El Boulevard's broader transformation, which received the international MAPIC Award for Best Refurbishment Project.
