The Alavese capital will once again move to the rhythm of the Rubik's Cube this weekend. Vitoria-Gasteiz is hosting the second edition of the Gasteiz Open on April 18 and 19 at the Ondare building, located on the Paseo de la Biosfera.
This official speedcubing championship will bring together nearly a hundred participants, solidifying Vitoria-Gasteiz as a meeting point for enthusiasts of this discipline. The event, promoted by individuals with the support of the EuskalCubing association, continues an initiative that seeks to establish itself in the city after its first edition.
Speedcubing involves solving the Rubik's Cube and other similar puzzles in the shortest possible time. Beyond speed, it is a practice that demands concentration, memory, and quick reactions. Since 1982, championships in this modality have proliferated in cities and countries worldwide.
There will be nine different categories, including 3x3x3, 2x2x2, 4x4x4, 3x3x3 blindfolded, 3x3x3 one-handed, Clock, Megaminx, Pyraminx, and Skewb. Results can be followed live via the WCA Live platform, although they will be provisional until official validation after the competition.
Local talent will also play a prominent role. Vitoria-Gasteiz boasts over 15 speedcubers, some of whom are among the best nationally. Last year, 104 competitors participated, ranging in age from 8 to 67, with international representation from countries such as Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, and Poland.
