The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has unanimously approved the installation of a plaque in the Lakua neighborhood to remember the Gao Lacho Drom Roma settlement, integrating it into the city's historical memory.

A plaque will be placed in the Galeón Park, located in the Lakua neighborhood, to commemorate the Gao Lacho Drom Roma settlement, which was situated there during the 1980s. This initiative aims to recover a significant part of Vitoria-Gasteiz's urban memory, which currently goes unnoticed by most citizens.
This settlement served as a transitional space, offering a path from shantytown conditions to more dignified living circumstances. The goal is to achieve permanent recognition of the history and contribution of the Roma people, extending beyond the specific events held around April 8.

"The recognition of the Roma people cannot be limited solely to the acts and declarations we make occasionally around April 8. It must be permanent and translate into memory, pedagogy, and visibility in the public space of our municipality."

The motion, presented by the Elkarrekin political group, was unanimously approved in the plenary session. According to the group's spokesperson, the recognition of Gao Lacho Drom is not only a matter of historical memory but also a political tool to combat current anti-Romani sentiment. Making this past visible is essential to dismantle prejudices and build a more egalitarian citizenry.
