The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council and the Álava Provincial Council have once again activated the Alavés Emergency Fund (FAE) with €50,000 to address the critical humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

This aid, requested by UNRWA Euskadi, will be used to maintain essential primary healthcare services provided by the United Nations agency to the Gazan population, and will strengthen the detection and treatment of child malnutrition.
The humanitarian situation remains critical for Gaza's approximately 2.1 million inhabitants. Three years after the current escalation of the conflict began, the population continues to face severe difficulties accessing basic services, while the destruction of infrastructure and restrictions on humanitarian access hinder the response on the ground. Over 73,000 people have died and more than 174,000 have been injured since October 2023. Recent UN reports indicate that 340 children have died in Gaza in the past year despite ceasefire calls.
This new aid marks the sixth activation of the Alavés Emergency Fund to meet the needs of the Gazan population. During this period, the Alava institutions have supported various humanitarian aid initiatives aimed at ensuring access to food, medical care, basic necessities, and other essential services for the population affected by the conflict.
The intervention funded by the Alava institutions is part of UNRWA's emergency appeal and prioritizes healthcare and nutritional support for the most vulnerable populations, especially young children at risk of malnutrition, pregnant and lactating women. The funds will enable the financing of medical and nursing staff responsible for the early detection and treatment of child malnutrition cases.
Despite the difficulties arising from the conflict, UNRWA maintains an extensive healthcare network in Gaza. It currently operates six health centers, four temporary health facilities, and 62 mobile medical teams providing assistance across the Strip. In July 2026 alone, agency healthcare professionals attended over 73,000 medical consultations in one week.
