Ertzaintza Arrests Man in Vitoria's Old Town for Bottle Attack

A man was arrested in Vitoria-Gasteiz's Old Town during the early hours of Saturday for assaulting another individual with a bottle, prompting an officer to draw their weapon to manage the situation.

The incident occurred in Vitoria-Gasteiz's Old Town, around 1:30 AM on Saturday. The Ertzaintza received an alert about an ongoing assault, and an plainclothes patrol was dispatched to the scene.
Upon arrival, officers observed two men assaulting each other. As they approached, they confirmed that one of them, a young man of Maghrebi origin, was attacking the other with the neck of a broken bottle. The assailant maintained an aggressive and threatening demeanor, which led one of the ertzainas to draw their service weapon and repeatedly order him to cease his actions.

When he finally released the bottle and threw it to the ground, officers proceeded with his arrest for an alleged crime of assault. The injured party, a 25-year-old man also of Maghrebi origin, sustained cutting and bleeding wounds on his hands, incurred while attempting to repel the attack. After initial on-site attention, he was evacuated to a hospital in Vitoria-Gasteiz for medical assistance.
The detainee was transferred to police facilities for the corresponding procedures and subsequently brought before judicial authorities on Saturday morning. Furthermore, the Ertzaintza's Internal Affairs Department has initiated an investigation to verify whether the police action complied with current guidelines.
