Artium Museum in Vitoria-Gasteiz will present two main events in the coming weeks: the film 'Foragers' by artist Jumana Manna and the exhibition 'Silhouette and other stories' by Irene Kopelman. Additionally, an event focused on publishing practices has been organized.
Tomorrow, Thursday, September 17, the film 'Foragers' (2022) by the Palestinian artist will be screened. This program explores the place of the moving image within the exhibition space. 'Foragers' portrays the dramas surrounding the collection of wild edible plants in Palestine, employing fiction, documentary, and archival footage to show the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs.
Jumana Manna (b. 1987) is a visual artist and filmmaker based between Jerusalem and Berlin. Her work examines representations of power through the body, land, and materiality in relation to colonial legacies and the history of places. Recent solo exhibitions by Manna include: 'Jumana Manna' (Collection Lambert, Avignon, 2026); 'Sebastia' (a large-scale public art commission for the Government Quarter of Norway, Oslo, 2026); 'Your Time Passes and Mine Has No Ends' (Hollybush Gardens, London, 2026); 'Break, Take, Erase, Tally' (touring) (Rialto6, Lisbon; Kunsthall Stavanger; Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus; MoMA PS1, New York, 2022-2024); or 'Preservation Paradox' (Matadero Madrid, 2022).
The film 'Foragers', approximately one hour in duration, will be shown in its original version with alternating subtitles in Spanish and Basque, and is supported by MONDRAGON.
Furthermore, the museum will inaugurate the exhibition 'Silhouette and other stories' on October 3, dedicated to the artist Irene Kopelman (Córdoba, Argentina, b. 1974). The exhibition presents previous works stemming from the artist's research into geological formations, such as Alpine glaciers, alongside new work created in the Araba region, related to the geological formation of Peña Carrias on the border between Araba and Burgos, where Kopelman has conducted extensive research in recent years. The exhibition also includes a detailed overview of Kopelman's extensive editorial work since 2003 in collaboration with the independent Amsterdam-based publisher Roma Publications.
Coinciding with the inauguration, on Sunday, October 4, 'A Matter of Words' has been organized, an event on editorial practices and reading. It will bring together various industry professionals for a day of presentations, talks, and round tables from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM. The event is curated by Thomas Boutoux (Paris, 1975) and Alejandro Cesarco (Montevideo, 1975) and will feature participation from publishers and bookstores such as After 8 Books & Publication Studio (Paris); Belleza Infinita (Bilbao); Biel Books (New York / Mallorca); Brillo Editorial (Valencia / Bilbao); Caja Negra (Buenos Aires / Madrid); Caniche Editorial (Ibarrangelu); Estudio Ejemplar (Valencia); Fluent Books (Santander); Hegoa Diskak (Bera); Hopscotch Reading Room & Cutt Press (Berlin); Lawrence (Madrid); MiraLookBooks (Madrid); Paraguay Press (Paris); Silver Press & Spiral House (London); and Tejido Ajado (Madrid). Speakers will include Carlos Copertone, Mela Dávila Freire, Irene Kopelman, Siddhartha Lokanandi, Kristen Vida Alfaro, Blanca Sotos, and Benjamin Thorel.
Program: Opening at 10:00 AM; presentation by organizers at 10:45 AM; talks and debates 'In Good Company: Every Here and There' (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM), addressing community creation, distribution strategies, and the social role of bookstores; talks and debates 'New Directions' (4:00 PM – 7:00 PM), focusing on the sustainability and future of various forms of publishing; and closing at 8:00 PM.
