Almudena Cid, one of the most emblematic and beloved figures in sports and culture, surprised her followers this Saturday with an image shared on Instagram showcasing her recent change of look. The former gymnast greeted her followers with a scissor emoji and a picture highlighting a notable haircut.
She is considered one of the most respected figures in sports history. Having started in rhythmic gymnastics at the age of seven at the Beti Aurrera club in Vitoria-Gasteiz, she built an unprecedented professional career that established her as a legend in the discipline. Her career is marked by remarkable competitive longevity, especially in rhythmic gymnastics, a sport known for its athletes retiring at a young age.
Her career's greatest achievement lies in her consistent performance at the highest level; she is the only rhythmic gymnast globally to have reached four consecutive Olympic finals, competing in Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, and Beijing 2008. In the latter two, she earned an Olympic diploma by finishing in eighth place, solidifying her elite international status.
Domestically, Cid was an undisputed champion, claiming the Spanish absolute championship title eight times in the top category. Internationally, in addition to earning over a hundred caps, she won a gold medal at the 2005 Mediterranean Games in Almería. Her technical legacy also includes the 'Cid Tostado,' a unique element approved by the International Gymnastics Federation. After retiring in 2008, her outstanding sports career was honored with the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sporting Merit.
Following her elite athletic career, the Basque personality has forged a successful multidisciplinary path. She has particularly excelled in literature as the author of 'Olympia,' a popular series of children's and young adult stories inspired by her own sports life, aimed at empowering young female readers. Concurrently, she has established herself as an actress, appearing in productions like 'Errementari' and television series such as 'El secreto de Puente Viejo,' while also working regularly as a contributor and commentator for various media outlets.
