The Valdegovía region, in the Álava province, is preparing to host a classic summer event with the ninth edition of the Schubertíada. This musical initiative, which brings a segment of the programming from Catalonia to the region, will offer a wide array of selected performers and programs during the month of July. Concerts will be held in the churches of Nuestra Señora in Tuesta, San Martín in Bachicabo, and Del Salvador in Espejo.
The event is organized by the Associació Franz Schubert in collaboration with the Valdegovía City Council, and also benefits from the support of the Provincial Council of Álava and Fundación Vital. The Schubertíada aims to bring some of the greatest talents in national and international music to spaces of significant heritage value. Concerts are scheduled for 8:00 PM throughout July.
“"To bring to the public some of the greatest talents in the national and international music scene to spaces of high heritage value."
The festival will open on July 3rd in Tuesta with a duo featuring soprano Meredith Wohlgemuth and pianist Jinhee Park, both from New York. The first part of the concert will present works such as Marc Migó's cycle Canviar de cel, while the second will feature Querida Ofelia, a program of songs that engages with the experiences of William Shakespeare's character.
The following day, July 4th, baritone Bo Wang and pianist Yuriko Watanabe, winners of the latest Helmut Deutsch International Lied Competition in Vienna, will make their festival debut with a program focused on works by Schubert, Richard Strauss, and Gustav Mahler.
On July 11th, soprano Katharina Konradi, who inaugurated the first Schubertíada edition in 2018, returns accompanied by pianist Julius Drake. Together, they will perform lieder by Schubert, as well as a selection from Enric Granados's Tonadillas and Eduard Toldrà's Seis canciones sobre textos clásicos.
On July 18th in Espejo, the saxophone quartet Kebyart will present works by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Mikel Urquiza, Franz Schubert, and Dani López Pradas. The group returns after their success in 2023 with a program including Les perfectibilités-traité d’ornement, written specifically for them by Urquiza.
The Schubertíada's presence in Álava will conclude on July 25th in Bachicabo with the young Cuarteto Iberia, who will perform works by Mateu Fletxa El Viejo, Luigi Boccherini, and Franz Schubert's iconic quartet La muerte y la doncella.
Before each concert, music communicator Enrique Bert or the artists themselves will provide a brief contextualization of the works and composers.
