The Zumaia City Council has announced details for the upcoming Octopus Day fair on September 19. This event, centered around gastronomy, the maritime world, and octopus, will be held at the Eusebio Gurrutxaga square from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The registration form will be available starting Monday, August 17, and will remain open until September 1.
Additionally, the Council has invited local associations to participate in managing the food stalls and the community meal for Octopus Day. Associations that operate on a non-profit basis in sports, culture, or social fields are eligible to register. For stall management, each group will need a responsible team and at least 20 individuals over 16 years old for octopus preparation on the day before the festival. On the festival day itself, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 PM, teams of 15 to 20 people will work at each stall.
One of the participating associations will be responsible for the community meal service. This includes setting up infrastructure, preparing the necessary materials to serve approximately 400 attendees, serving dishes, collecting tickets, and managing entry to the tent. Post-meal, they will also handle cleaning and dismantling, requiring an estimated 25 people.
Interested associations must register before Wednesday, August 19, at the Tourist Office by calling 943 14 33 96 or emailing turismoa@zumaia.eus. Following registration, the Council will hold a meeting to distribute tasks by lottery and explain the specific duties for each group.
Associations must meet the same conditions set by the Council for local group grants, including proving they have no outstanding debts with Social Security or the Treasury. Furthermore, it will be required that associations can conduct their activities in Basque, particularly those serving drinks, who must be of legal age.
