Zumaia has been unable to advance in the Gipuzkoa Intercomarcal Championship. They played five matches over the weekend, three in rubber pala and two in remonte, and were defeated in all of them. Consequently, the Zumaia team is out of the remonte competition and faces an uphill battle in the rubber pala championship.
The two return matches in the remonte modality were played on Sunday in Oiartzun, and similar to the first leg, Zumaia lost both. In the first match, Carballo and Ostolaza lost 35-21 against Oiartzun's Flores and Pichele. In the second game, they were defeated 40-33 by Azpiroz and Irigoyen. Thus, Zumaia is eliminated from the tournament in the round of sixteen.
In rubber pala, they also lost the three matches played against Soraluze. The return matches are scheduled for this Sunday at the Aitzuri fronton, and the Zumaia players will need to perform exceptionally well if they wish to qualify for the quarterfinals. Reversing the results from the past weekend does not seem easy, as Soraluze played with considerable dominance and won the first leg matches by significant margins.
The results from the first leg matches were as follows: Beristain lost 20-3 against Gallastegi; Cabaleiro and Carballo lost 20-8 against Soraluze's Gisasola and Gascon; and Beristain lost 20-1 against Atxotegi.
